Tutorial: Make a Logo or Initial Rug with Duct Tape
I wanted to have a really cool rug for my Jamberry Nails booth at the Holiday Bazaars this year. I looked at some pretty awesome ones at IKEA, but I didn't want to spend that much money right now. While shopping at Wal-Mart, I came across a small area rug in solid black for just $19.97. I popped it in my cart and my head started whirling with the possibilities for making it awesome.
I thought about bleach dying. I thought about making a stencil and using fabric paint. I thought about hand painting it. I thought about splatter painting it. In the end, I thought too long and ran out of time! So, I got a roll of neon pink duct tape and my x-acto knife and went to work.

Home Alone #Owling
I can't believe that Momma forgot about me on Sunday! I know she was way busy, working in the Nursery at The Crossing Church, attending a meeting for parents of Down's Syndrome babies with the Dallas Down's Syndrome Guild and attending Brandy's Premier Designs Mystery Hostess party - but hey! I was a little lonely!

31 Days to Clean Challenge: Day 3

The Mary challenge this week was tough! I interviewed each of my older children and my husband, individually. Here are there unedited responses to my question "As it pertains to the house, and what I do or don't do in it and for it, what makes you feel most loved?"

His answer was a furtive glance over my shoulder at my desk:
Calvin and Jordan both said they felt unloved when I yell at them :(
Wow - that was brutal! I was afraid before I asked that they wouldn't be able to say anything that made them feel loved, because I'm NOT a great housekeeper. I'm a lot of fun though ;) (except when I'm yelling at my kids, apparently!)
After asking these questions, I reflected on what was behind the words, what they didn't say, or couldn't say. For William, I think he feels most loved when it is clear that we have prepared for his return for work. For Calvin, he feels most loved when he feels served/cared for. For Jordan, she feels most loved when we do things together. If you've ever read Love Languages
by Gary Chapman, you may see that these relate to the languages of Acts of Service and Quality Time. I know that my husband's love languages are Gifts and Acts of Service. My son's is Quality Time and Acts of Service. My daughter's is Physical Touch, Quality Time and Words of Affirmation.
The challenge was to take what we learned and apply or continue. I have already begun implementing some "Welcome Home Daddy
" type principles. We stop about an hour or so before William is expected home and pick up our mess, make sure the counters are clean, the dishwasher is unloaded and try to straighten the Family Room. I am going to try to make progress on my desk (bahhhhh - it would help if the other 4 people who can walk wouldn't put anything here too!)
In the last few weeks I've made a very concentrated effort NOT to yell, so that should help with the un-loved part for the kids. For Calvin, I am going to spend more time vacuuming. I really don't mind vacuuming that much, because it makes the house look so much better! Plus, you have to clear the floor to vacuum, so that will kill 2 birds with one stone. :)
For Jordan, I'm going to make a conscious effort to include her in my chores, rather than giving her something to do on her own. Ever since she was a baby, she has been happiest when we were all in the same room! When she started walking, she would drag everyone by the hand, one at a time, until we were all in the same place. Then she would sit down and play quietly!
For the Martha challenge, fortunately I had a luxury last week: 2 maids came and cleaned! So my cabinets are clean, even on top!

- I like it when you help me clean up after I paint

To Bling or Not To Bling?
I have had many people tell me that consumers are looking for bling. They love it. If I would just add some razzle dazzle my business would really take off.
About six weeks ago I was listening to KCBI where I heard the tail end of a discussion on modesty by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. A fresh interest in the subject was stirred up in me that day. I’ve always been raised modest, dressed modest, tried to instill modesty in my daughter etc, but it really had been an outward clothing issue. As I listened, and subsequently researched her website and found the True Woman Movement, the manifesto and the 30 Day True Women Makeover (you may remember my blog on the topic recently). I buckled in for this makeover, not really expecting to be made over much, since I’m already a Christian, conservative, and an all around pretty good girl!
Boy was I wrong! God worked so much in my life in those few minutes each day by e-mail! I even started walking with Him each morning and talking to Him and more importantly LISTENING in a different way than I had before. Now, it wasn’t just the 30 day makeover, God was also pouring into my life through a few good friends, our Pastor’s messages, our small group study and just common sense observations of my surroundings.
I realized that I am where I am today because of God’s grace and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. I owe much to many good friends, not the least of which is Laura Belt. I realized how much I’ve taken for granted the truths I know, How uncommon it is to see people who genuinely desire to follow after God in all they do, even if it makes them look silly (I’m so guilty on this one – I don’t want to be a “freak”, one of “those people”, “backwards”, etc. I am thankful that God is working on my daily to erase my pride and increase my desire to be what He wants me to be, nothing more and nothing less!)
I realized that modesty is not contained in what we wear, but rather in the desires and motivations of our hearts. Here is where the “bling thing” comes into play. I’ve been considering adding bling to my jewelry; rhinestones and crystals, chunkier pieces, etc. In fact, while at a wholesale jewelry findings supplier recently I was talking about my inner struggle on the topic and another shopper overheard. She looked at me with a mixture of curiosity and disgust and asked "You've got a problem with bling? All I know is I sell a ton of it!"
The problem is, it’s a feeble attempt to please “the market”. We all like bling – why? It gets us noticed! And in God’s economy, that is an issue. We were created to worship Him, to bring Glory to Him, to draw others to Him. If we strive for attention for ourselves, and never turn the glory to Him, then we’ve missed the entire point of our existence.
I’m not suggesting that it is “wrong” to wear jewelry, but rather we feel the essence of what the New Testament author is saying in 1 Peter 3:1-9
“In the same way, wives, be subject to your own husbands. Then, even if some (husbands) are disobedient to the word, they will be won over without a word by the way you live, when they see your pure and reverent conduct. Let your beauty not be (only) external – the braiding of hair and wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes –but the inner person of the heart, the lasting beauty of a gentle and tranquil spirit, which is precious in God’s sight. For in the same way the holy women who hoped in God long ago adorned themselves by being subject to their husbands, like Sarah who obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. You become her children when you do what is good and have no fear in doing so.”
If our bling is on the outside, we draw attention to ourselves. If our BLING is on the inside, we bring attention and glory to God.
So my friends, you will find a bit of bling in my shop, but I pray that you will find much more BLING in my heart. And I pray that you’ll allow God to add a whole bunch of razzle dazzle BLING to yours as well!

Home and Garden Show
I've been a busy bee preparing for the first show of 2010!
I'm participating in Arts Alive, the Wichita Falls, TX Home and Garden show. Last year's show drew 200,000 people! I'm all set up and ready to sell it all - I don't want to bring anything home except cash! LOL
Just thought I'd pop in and let you know what I was up to. If I get a chance to wander tomorrow, I'll share pictures :)

Making the most of your decorating budget
You may know that I owned my own event planning business for 10 years. I closed it in 2006 after my 3rd child passed away. Well, A dear friend's daughter is getting married and I promised her mother that I would help with the wedding. (You probably remember Ashley's post during my 12 Days of Christmas series).
I have been going through all my files and getting ready to dust off my event planner's hat, and I remembered that I used to blog! I have recovered my info and linked up to that old account, and here is a post from "back in the day" that is still just as good as it was then :)
I recently helped a client with a dinner banquet for 200 people. They wanted a lot of bang for not a lot of bucks. This is not an uncommon delimma!
Hotels and banquet facilites regularly provide "standard" decorations at no charge, or at a very small fee. The problem is, well, they are "standard". They are boring. I won't go so far as to say that they are ugly, but they are definately predictable. So how do you dress your wedding reception or dinner banquet tables for $25 or less? The answer is "You have to be creative."
Start by looking around - what do you have in abundance already? What is easily attainable for a good price? In many cases, the answer is right under your nose.
For this client, we used ivory candles and tons of fresh rose petals. We used some things that we already had, like the gold candlesticks and candleplates, but the look can be recreated using your own collection of candlesticks and candle plates.
Here's an idea - go to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army thrift store. People regularly donate brass and silver candlesticks of all varieties. Don't like brass? Spray paint them ivory or another color to match your decor theme. The key to keeping such an ecclectic decor together and looking intentional is to use the same color candles. We used ivory in many different forms, pillar, votive, ball and tapers. Look for sales at Garden Ridge, Michaels, or JoAnn's, ask for a quantity discount (it never hurts) or shop at a wholesale store. Always use unscented candles when planning for a large group - you don't want to aggrevate anyone's allergies!
The fresh rose petals are a lot of work, but well worth it! I recommend that you plan for 1 dozen per table for maximum impact and coverage. Go to Sam's, Costco or the grocery store and buy roses in your desired color. If they have some that are in their "last glory" you can usually get a really good price on them. When you get them home, remove any brown or damaged petals and discard. Gently remove the petals and place in a Ziplock bag. Do not include the innermost petals that are "shriveled". For extra sparkle, spray some of the petals with Design Master glitter spray. Store the rose petals (in Ziplock bags) in the refrigerator up to 24 hours before your event. (Make sure that you remove any fresh citrus, onions or garlic before storing fresh flowers in the refrigerator, the acids can damage the flowers).
When it is time to decorate, use heavy clear plastic disposable plates under your pillar candles. This not only saves you money, but it saves you clean up time - just toss them!

Always use unscented candles when planning for a large group - you don't want to aggrevate anyone's allergies!
The fresh rose petals are a lot of work, but well worth it! I recommend that you plan for 1 dozen per table for maximum impact and coverage. Go to Sam's, Costco or the grocery store and buy roses in your desired color. If they have some that are in their "last glory" you can usually get a really good price on them. When you get them home, remove any brown or damaged petals and discard. Gently remove the petals and place in a Ziplock bag. Do not include the innermost petals that are "shriveled". For extra sparkle, spray some of the petals with Design Master glitter spray. Store the rose petals (in Ziplock bags) in the refrigerator up to 24 hours before your event. (Make sure that you remove any fresh citrus, onions or garlic before storing fresh flowers in the refrigerator, the acids can damage the flowers).
When it is time to decorate, use heavy clear plastic disposable plates under your pillar candles. This not only saves you money, but it saves you clean up time - just toss them!
