A Minute to Pin It - Pinterest Party!
Are you hooked on Pinterest yet? No? Get over there! It is amazing - I wish that I had something like it when I was planning weddings and events! You can create your own "boards" for any topic you like (see a few of mine below). You can also follow friend's boards, so you can see what they like. It's a great way to organize a menu, a party, a room, an evening out (or in!), an outfit... Just about anything you want to be able to see!
I'm so happy I found this great party! Visit with me over at 7 On A Shoestring!
Follow me on Pinterest too!
Happy Pinning :)

Small is the new BIG
I have many friends who own their own businesses. Direct Sales has been a lifesaver for many of them. Many times, you don't even have to have a home party to order, you can order right on their website and it can be shipped to you directly. If you do not have a favorite consultant for a company that you have in mind, please ask, and I am sure I can put you in touch with a consultant!
Something to keep in mind this holiday season: You, the customer, are our everything. Spending $100 at a BIG BOX store during the holidays won't make a difference to anyone; but spending $100 through a home business owner for Christmas means our business can continue; it gives us our pay, provides for our families, helps us meet our personal goals, and helps us continue to do what we love without using harsh sales techniques. The big stores will not care about you the way we will! You mean the world to us - shop a home/direct sales business for Christmas this year!
If you are a business owner or direct sales representative and you would like to be listed in my holiday gift guide this year, please fill out the information below:

Time heals all wounds... (and benefit auction links)
so the saying goes anyway. What I've learned is it is what you DO with your time that heals the wound.
If I were to break my leg - really bad, bone sticking out and everything - and just go on about my business, expecting time to heal it, I would probably die of gangrene (or pain!) pretty soon. No one would do that, no one would recommend it!
Instead, you have to tend to the wound. The immediate need is to stop the bleeding. If you loose too much blood, you will die. The next thing is to set the bone as right as you can, then stabilize it. Then you have to repair the broken skin, cleaning it thoroughly and stitching it back together. After this, you need to cover it to protect it - germs are the enemy, they cause infection and then the wound would have to be reopened. Now finally you have to brace the whole leg so the bone will heal, then stay off of it and give yourself plenty of time and rest for it to heal.
This is how it is when you are in deep grief. For me, it was the loss of my son, Ian, 4 and a half years ago. There was that instant reaction - stopping the bleeding. We made it through the funeral planning, shopping for an outfit to bury him in, the first night in our home without him, the burial, binding my breasts to stop the milk... The bleeding had stopped, but we were still broken.
Next we tried to find our "new normal" - setting the bone right. We painted the living room, closed the door to his bedroom, canceled the "how your baby's doing at ____ months" e-mails, coupons and catalogs, bowed out of many social and church obligations.
For me, information is my friend. I did tireless research on this new enemy SIDS. This cleaned my wound, but it was painful. I found out many things I did "right" and others I could have done better. I met many other grieving moms and dads, reading their stories made me angry, sad, helpless, lonely - I also felt united with them, a part of a club I wanted no membership in.
To close the wound and cover it to protect it, I joined several online forums and support groups. This was uncomfortable in so many ways! I was sharing my pain with people who understood and cared. That was great! The flip-side was that I was now participating in their story, loving and losing their children, feeling fresh grief and anger and new questions. That was hard. The best thing though was hearing the stories from parents further down the road in their grief journey. Seeing them LIVING, loving, laughing... I don't know if I truly believed one day I would reach that point, but the fact that they had gave me HOPE. These stitches of hope held my wounded heart together when all else threatened to tear it in two. Their love extended to me was the cover that protected me when I was afraid that I would die from heartbreak.
The last part is the hardest - stabilizing and resting. This is where the true healing takes place. The problem is it takes time. Lots and lots of time. I remember praying "HOW LONG? How long must I suffer? How long until you heal my wounded heart? You said you came to "bind the brokenhearted' - surely I qualify?!?!?!" Slowly I began to have better days. Days that I was able to get out of bed, able to go to lunch with friends.
One day I overdid it by attending a party where one family member had a child that was one day older than Ian. She was wearing tennis shoes, Ian never got to wear real shoes. It wasn't fair! I wanted tennis shoes on my boy, I wanted him back! I closed myself in the master bathroom and had a panic attack. Friends joined me to hug and listen and give me a cold cloth for my face. But I didn't give up on my healing. I took that time to rest, enjoy the stability of my friends as they propped me up and cared for me. After 15 minutes I rejoined the party, sitting elsewhere so I couldn't see the little girl.
Eventually I was aware that I had gone an entire day without crying. I still thought about him all the time, still wanted him back, still would have done almost anything to change those days... but I didn't cry. That's when I knew that I could try to do more. I started grocery shopping again. I volunteered for a small project. I reached out to another mom who had just lost a child. (I should mention that I NEVER planned to do this! People kept saying "just think about all the lives you'll be able to touch and people you'll be able to help because of this experience." I told my husband that I was going to break the arm of the next person who said that!)
So, time does not heal all wounds. It is what you do with your time that brings healing. If you are trying to heal, consider what you have been doing with your time. If you have spent too much time on what-ifs, blaming yourself, blaming someone else, wishing for something different - may I suggest you try something else? Trust. For me it was trust that God had a plan, and somehow this must be part of it. I didn't understand it, I didn't like it, I wouldn't recommend or endorse it, but I could try to trust it. I knew that "that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger" and though some days I wondered which direction it would go, I pressed on. I knew that I would be a stronger and better person. I owed that to Ian, I owed it to myself and my family.
Maybe you can't trust God (yet). Then trust that you WILL survive. You WILL be stronger. Here's a link to another article I wrote on overcoming the "What-ifs" that plague you. It's how I survived and grew stronger.
This contemplation was brought on by hearing of Maddie, a 4 month old little girl who went to Heaven via SIDS last week. Her momma writes at "It all started when two people fell in love".
Megan Green of Polka Dot Junkie is holding a benefit auction that starts tomorrow, February 28th.
I have donated the following items, please stop by and place a bid to help support the Staat family and their expenses incurred as a result of Maddie's death and funeral.

Several weeks ago there was an online auction benefit for a family who had lost the husband. I can't figure out who it was! They raised nearly $9000 and had great response.
I wanted to touch base with that blogger to ask a few questions about my upcoming benefit auction.
Please send me anything you think would be helpful - and if you would like to donate item(s) to this cause I would really appreciate it!

It's my birthday!
I'm a Christmas baby - I used to think that the whole world celebrated my birthday and Jesus' at the same time! My B-day is actually today, December 26th. I'm 35 - and I wouldn't trade it for 15 or even 25!
I know myself so much better, how strong I am, how creative and competent in my own talents. I've stopped trying to be perfect, trying to be right, trying to fit in and trying to petend that I had already achieved the previous. I've learned to appreciate my flaws, learn from every mistake, embrace that which makes me unique and to just be honest. With myself first and then with others!
I'm so happy that I have a man by my side who had guided much of this "self-awareness".
I'm surrounded by loving friends and family who go out of their way to wish me birthday blessings and are always such a blessing just to be around. They have been God's arms extended to me.
I know that the best is yet to come!

(a rare shot from dating days - 1995!)
I'm thankful for the Grace of a Saviour who loves me enough to let me wander and always welcomes me home. I'm blessed by 4 children, 3 of whom I have the honor of caring for every day. (Calvin, Jordan and Gavin - the lights of my life)
I've entrusted the other into the competent hands of my Father and am very much looking forwad to the day when we are all together again.(Ian, just minutes before he returned to Heaven at 3 months of age)

On the 1st day of Christmas... A Partridge in a Pear Tree
Do you love the old “12 Days of Christmas” song? I do! I remember wondering what it meant as a kid, and wishing (and hoping and praying) as a teen that I would have a "true love" who would shower me with such fancy. Now, as a 4 time mom, most of the time I just hear a cash register "ca-ching" echoing in the chorus (by the way, there are people who figure this out – the 2009 cost? $21,465.56)
Image courtesy of artist Annie Soudain
A few years ago I heard an interesting tale that this song was actually written as a secret way for persecuted Christians to practice their faith and pass it down to their children. Mystery and intrigue! Right up my alley. Well, it’s not technically true, but it is still a really neat thought, so I’ll be sharing the history of each day – along with the “new” symbolism!
Since the song is probably French in origin, many have speculated that the pear tree is in fact supposed to be perdrix, French for partridge and pronounced per-dree. But now-a-days in France the first day’s gift is “a good stuffing without bones”. Although that sounds tasty, I like pears, so I’m sticking with the English version!
Now, if we were in Scotland, on the first day our lovies would be bringing us
In the modern folklore version, the since the partridge is considered one of the most protective birds and shelters their young with their own bodies, it stands for the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. The cross is often referred to as a tree and it seems fitting that the partridge is in a tree.
The historical counterpart is from "A New Dial" that included 12 verses that pertained to the 12 Days of Christmas. The first day is:
Well – at any rate, I love to sing this part in a round. One year at a Christmas party everyone was assigned one of the days to sing. This was great fun! After my temporary bitterness at not drawing the beautiful “5 Go-old Rings!” (can you tell I like to be the center of attention?) I really embraced the partridge and it’s tree! Even people who mumble and fumble through the rest of the song ALWAYS get this one right!
One thing I won’t mumble about is this fabulous vintage apron:
After I blogged about it on my Fun and Funky Friday post a few weeks back, Lorraine of Aprons n More contacted me letting me know that she’d like to offer it as a prize to my readers! WOW – thanks Lorraine!
She’s a pretty neat lady, with a passion for vintage aprons (and so much more as the name implies!) She’s busy working on TWO books, loving on her 4 adorable grandbabies and hopes to fill her Etsy shop with lots more soon! For now, she’s got fabulous aprons listed (some of her over 400 piece collection!)
So, to enter Day 1’s giveaway, here’s the scoop. You’ll get 1 entry for each of the following:
• Post a comment (1 per day – so after you check out the next day’s blog, come back here and enter again – just like the song builds every day, so do your chances!
• Post the button (then a comment letting me know)

• Blog, Tweet or Facebook about this giveaway with the link (then a comment letting me know)
• Follow me (then a comment letting me know)
• BONUS entry! Visit Loraine’s Etsy shop and leave a comment telling us which apron you like best!
The fine print:
• You must leave a SEPARATE comment for each entry – this is the only way to keep it fair and straight (and keep me from having to kill a tree printing them out and cutting them apart!)
• All giveaways will be held on December 13th
• A random number generator will be used to determine the winner(s)
• If your e-mail address is not publicly listed on your profile, please include it with your comment(s)
• We reserve the right to re-draw if the first winner does not respond within 48 hours (please don’t let this happen – that would just be sad!)
And – (aren’t you glad you read all the way to the end? There is a reward for being detail oriented and “stickin’ with it”!) as if you needed more incentive to enter this and the other drawings –
I will be drawing, from ALL the comments on all the days (I’m getting nervous just thinking of the math involved – no worries, hubby is inclined that way, I’ll put him in charge)

A new favorite destination: Bon Ton Vintage Store
For all of you out there who love vintage clothes, old books, vinyl and more... You just HAVE to go visit my new favorite "haunt" Bon Ton Vintage store.
On my way back from The Seasons of Aggieland Bazaar in College Station, I decided to do some flea-marketing (a favorite pastime). I made a list of all the places between there and Dallas, just relishing the possibilities. The first one didn't open until 9 AM, and I was there at 7:30, the second was only open the 2nd weekend, I was there on the last. At this point, I started calling the others on the list!. The third was out of business, the fourth I couldn't find, the fifth was long-gone. I was pretty bummed out! By now I was in Waxahachie and almost home when I got a call from Barbara at Bon Ton Vintage. She told me where they were in Forreston, TX and I turned around!
It turns out that they are in the same place as a flea market used to be, about 15 years ago, I wasn't looking for a building, but boy am I glad I found them!
Before I left I had heard all about John and Barbara's Jazz trio with their friend Jeff (back in the day) and even scored a CD with some of their best stuff! John mesmerized me with stories of the famous folks he had met and knew, his childhood and more. I couldn't resist snapping a few pics while we stood outside talking...

This is John Kauffman, proprietor
I was immediately greeted by John and Barbara, who called me by name because she recognized my voice from the phone. I introduced myself and explained my art, then they started showing me around. I started a pile of treasures very shortly thereafter! I went upstairs where I met Suellen (pronounced Sue Ellen), a friend and regular (make sure you ask for her when you go - Barbara said she practically lives there!).
Upstairs is vintage clothing heaven, I made a quick mental list of all the friends that I would have tell! There were furs, shoes, handbags and hats. Day wear and formals from every decade. The display and ambiance was "top drawer" (inside joke!). And, oh - the vintage jewlery! I had a lot of fun digging through a tin of mismatches and brought home some lonely and broken things to [ReDeem].
Barbara and Kathy
Heading back downstairs I met Kathy, their daughter and Melissa, another friend and regular. It was about this time that I seriously considered calling and telling my husband I was moving to Forreston to be closer to my new friends! I spent 3 hours in this great shop!

So - if you love vintage stuff, good conversation, an interesting history lesson, visiting small towns, or just about anything, I think that you would just adore Bon Ton Vintage!
